I spent Christmas 2008 in Belize. I started out on Caye Caulker where I did little more than snorkel and relax in the sun. I spent the rest of my time in San Ignacio where I visited the Mayan underworld site - Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) and the ruins at Caracol.
I didn’t have a great reason to visit El Salvador. I’d heard there was some Mayan ruins that might be interesting and that seemed good enough. What I found were friendly people and a tourist industry that was only just getting itself organised.
Guatemala - December 2008 - January 2009
After leaving Belize, I crossed the border in to Guatemala. My first stop was Flores, in order to see Tikal and then I spent a couple of days in Antigua and climbed the volcano Pacaya.
I went to Honduras to see the Mayan ruins at Copan. The ruins are the only ones that allow tourists to enter underground tunnels and see the foundations of the ruins and how later structures were built on top of older structures. I also spent a couple of days in San Pedro Sula which is probably the city that I’ve felt the least safe in.
