SOUTH AMERICA
I reached Bolivia after travelling through Peru and only had a few days in La Paz, so I’ll need to go back and see the rest of the country one day. Tiwanaku is a pre-Incan city that is still being excavated, but there’s still some interesting things to see there. The Valley of the Moon is a series of rock formations from a period when La Paz was underwater - La Paz is 10,000ft about sea level -- making it the highest capital city in the world.
I had to spend a few days in Rio working, but made the most of it and spent a little time exploring the city.
Galapagos Islands - November 2006
The Galapagos Islands are amazing. I spent a week sailing around the islands, snorkelling and hiking around the islands watching the wildlife. The wildlife is stunning and mostly ignores humans so you can swim with the sea lions and stand and watched (and be watched by) a blue-footed booby. I loved the time I spent on the islands and would love to go back some day. Before going to the islands I spent some time in Quito, Ecuador (and on the way the aquarium in Atlanta) where I got to stand on the Equator, both at the government monument and the local museum, that’s actually on the equator - the government monument is in slightly the wrong place.
Peru is one my favourite places that I’ve visited. Flying over the Nazca lines was something I’d always wanted to do. Hiking the Inca Trail was a fantastic experience and I’d like to do it again some day. I really enjoyed hiking in the Amazon Jungle and meeting a traditional Shaman.
