Travel

I love to travel.  Every year I try and see as much of the world as I can.  I have a goal of visiting 100 countries by the time I’m 40.

I’m not much of a writer, but I’m trying to collect and share my experiences on these pages.  To make up for my lack of writing I take plenty of photos.

Galapagos Islands

Nestled on the equator, off the coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are an archipelago of numerous volcanic islands.

The islands are best known for their stunning wildlife and untouched natural beauty.  Charles Darwin visited the islands and it was his observations there that led him to his discovery of the theory of evolution.  His name is now given to a research centre on the island of Santa Cruz.

I visited the islands on a week long trip in November 2006.  Sailing from islands to island with a naturalist who each day led walks on the islands and snorkelling from out boat.

Peru

Peru was somewhere I’d long wanted to visit.  In June 2007 I finally got to visit the country and explore its many extraordinary sights.

I was amazed by the Nazca Lines.  I don’t know when I had first heard about these lines drawn in the desert; these pictures of animals that can be only viewed from the air and other lines, perfectly straight stretching in to the distance, but I found them fascinating.  What could they mean?  Who created them?  Even now the lines still have plenty of mystery about that and many conflicting theories about their origins and meaning.

The legacy of the Inca civilisation was a big draw to the country for me.  I wanted to hike the 27 mile Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and explore the famous Inca city.

Egypt

Who hasn’t seen pictures of the pyramids and heard stories of the Egyptian pharaohs?

I visited Egypt in March 2006.  It was my first trip to an Arab country and my first visit to an Islamic country.  I was excited to see the pyramids at Giza that I’d seen so many photos of.  I wanted to explore the famous Valley of the Kings.  I wasn’t disappointed.

Other than memories of the ancient places I visited I took away with me memories of a friendly and welcoming people and delicious cuisine.
